St.
George's, Grenada, February 1st,
2010:
The
celebrations of Grenada’s 36th
anniversary of Independence
continue with a plethora of
activities following a hectic
weekend, last weekend.
The
Independence Song finals were
contested on Saturday with Young
Sound once again emerging
victorious. Although the
attendance was less than stellar
those patriotic souls who showed
up enjoyed a wonderful night of
enjoyable Grenadian
entertainment.
Croquetta won the prize for
best-dressed Artiste on the
night of competition, with a
very sharp ensemble of the
National colors, inclusive of
his shoes.
Saturday also saw the hosting of
the first ever Breadfruit
festival, hosted by Bon Accord
estate in La Mode, St. George.
The festival included an oildown
competition and a host of dishes
and delicacies with breadfruit
as the main ingredient.
Highlights include an oildown
with red, green and gold
dumplings and also the very
tasty breadfruit ice cream.
The
Mt. Mortiz Organization for
Development hosted its monthly
breakfast at the Mt. Mortiz
playing field on Sunday morning
and along with the delicious
local food and music a cricket
match was played between a team
from Mt. Mortiz and a Celebrity
team. The Celebrities batted
first and scored 114 for 8 in 15
overs with Cheney Joseph hitting
a top score of 36. Mt. Mortiz
replied with 119 for 4 with
Dexter Mitchell capturing 2 for
19. Anthony “Jericho” Greenidge
hit the biggest six of the game,
a towering shot that should have
earned him more than 6 runs.
The
Independence Church Service also
took place on Sunday, at the St.
Patrick RC Church. The Service
featured readings of the
scriptures done by the Governor
General Sir Carlyle Glean, the
Prime Minister Hon. Tillman
Thomas and the Opposition Leader
Hon. Dr. Keith Mitchell.
The
Independence Celebrations
continue with more activities
this coming week including a
cultural showcase in Carriacou
on Thursday February 4th,
a cultural fiesta in Grenville
on Saturday February 6th
and the Military Parade and
Prime Minister’s address at the
National Cricket Stadium on
Sunday February 7th.
